Introduction

Daniel James Clarke is a travel writer, guidebook author and photographer from England, who has lived in Portugal since 2018. Having travelled to over 75 countries and been based in three continents, his work spans a variety of publications and topics, including newspapers, guidebooks and photography commissions.

 

Experience

With a background in hospitality and the performing arts, Daniel’s transition to travel photography was a natural evolution of his creative pursuits, and his shift into travel writing initially focused on food and wine, drawing on his expertise as a restaurant manager. While he has worked globally, in recent years he has focused on writing about his adopted home, Portugal, for the likes of Lonely Planet, The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Observer. 

Selected publications

Books: Lonely Planet Algarve (Author) and Lonely Planet Portugal (Contributor), alongside various other titles and coffee table books. 

Photography: Various photo projects, including displays of his work at Heathrow Airport as part of the GREAT! Campaign, in tourism destination marketing images, books and magazines, including Grazia and Lo—TEK Water.

Education

Daniel has a diploma in performing arts from Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, UK, and is currently studying for his National Council for the Training of Journalists Diploma. He’s also undertaken various courses and training related to wine and sommelier activities, including with WSET.

Awards

Daniel’s Lonely Planet Pocket Algarve was awarded Travel Guidebook of the Year at the British Guild of Travel Writers awards ceremony in 2025, and his video production has won numerous ART&TUR (Portugal's CIFFT) awards.
