Introduction

Martin Gayford is a writer, critic and curator. 

Experience

He is the author of books on Michelangelo, John Constable, Vincent van Gogh, Lucian Freud and David Hockney and collaborated on a survey of world sculpture with Antony Gormley. In 2004 he was the sitter for a portrait by Freud, and in 2013 sat for one by Hockney. He has worked on many exhibitions, both in Britain and abroad. His most recent books include How Painting Happens (and why it matters) published in 2024 and My Heart is This: Tracey Emin on Painting, 2026.
