New Experiences for a New Year

If your New Year’s resolution is to try new things, try ringing in the New Year at one of these destinations that host unparalleled festivities

From Buddhist bell-ringing ceremonies in Tokyo to jumping waves in Rio de Janeiro to watching the ball drop in New York City, every destination has their own unique way of ushering in the new year. These five cities around the world boast some of the best celebrations full of spirited culture, extravagant entertainment, and of course, plenty of fireworks.

Millions of party-goers gather at Copacabana Beach to celebrate the New Year.

Copacabana Beach sets the scene for Rio de Janeiro’s exuberant New Year’s Eve party, where millions of people come together to enjoy live music and dazzling fireworks right on the water’s edge. This vibrant gathering is full of culture and community, ideal for those looking for a lively start to the new year in a tropical destination.

The perfect mix of unique tradition and quintessential New Year’s entertainment, this iconic beach party offers a captivating taste of Brazilian heritage. Attendees all wear white to represent peace and renewal, and bring flowers to honor Lemanjá, the goddess of the sea. Even the food you eat has a purpose, lentils being a popular dish to bring good luck and abundance. After midnight, party-goers will jump seven waves and make seven wishes, then let the ocean cleanse them in preparation for the new year.

Hogmanay, the Scottish term for New Year’s Eve, is one of Scotland’s most significant – and most celebrated – holidays. The upcoming Edinburgh’s Hogmanay will run from December 29, 2025 to January 1, 2026; with unique traditions, lively entertainment, and joyous revelry lasting for days, the Scots certainly know how to kick off the New Year.

The event begins with a torchlight procession, where drums and bagpipes fill the air as performers in authentic garb trek through Old Town. Anticipation builds throughout the next few days, as concerts and attractions are held around the city, until the excitement culminates at the New Year’s Eve Street Party, the pinnacle of the celebration. But the fun isn’t over yet; the merriment continues into New Years Day, where a morning parade marches the streets and bold participants brave the cold by jumping into the river.

Watch the festivies and celebrate the New Year from a boat anchored in Sydney Harbor.

As one of the first major cities to enter the New Year, Sydney goes all out for their New Year’s Eve festivities. The city celebrates with one of the world’s most breathtaking firework displays set amongst its most celebrated landmarks throughout Sydney Harbor.

Spectators can marvel at the extravaganza from all over the harbor’s shore, but favorite viewing spots include the Royal Botanic Gardens and Observatory Hill. At Pier One Hotel and Luna Park Sydney you will find buzzing parties complete with live DJ sets, food and drink, and firework panoramas. For a more lavish experience, several rooftop bars and restaurants host events that promise picture-perfect views and gourmet cuisine. Those looking for a front-row seat can even sail into the New Year on a harbor cruise.

For a more lowkey New Year’s excursion, venture to Tokyo for the Joya no Kane, a bell-ringing ritual performed to cleanse for the New Year. At this traditional Buddhist ceremony, temple bells are rung 108 times to purify the 108 worldly desires. It is a truly enlightening experience that will brighten your spirit and bring good fortune to your upcoming year.

Several temples throughout Tokyo host this ritual, where in some, guests can even ring the bell for themselves. Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, Zojoji Temple, and Sensoji Temple are a few of the largest, attracting crowds of locals and visitors alike who come to meditate, reflect, and celebrate. At certain ceremonies, guests can shop at surrounding stalls and buy lucky charms to carry into the New Year.

Confetti rains down on Times Square during New York's famous New Year's Eve celebration.

This list would not be complete without New York City's Time Square Ball Drop. Witness a classic New Year’s Eve tradition and watch as the ball descends among the towering skyscrapers, complete with musical performances throughout the evening and a jaw-dropping firework display as the grand finale. Don’t forget to write your New Year’s wish on a piece of confetti that will later be dropped throughout the square as midnight strikes, making for a truly magical experience.

You don’t have to be among the crowds in Time Square to have an unforgettable New Years’ experience; New York City is alive all night. Ticketed events and parties are held throughout the city, and the fireworks can be seen at vantage points such as Prospect Park, Coney Island, or the Brooklyn Bridge. Similarly to Sydney, you can also count down from the water on a boat cruise around Manhattan. Simply being in this spirited metropolis is enough to make your night memorable.

Start off the New Year strong with a visit to one of these exciting destinations, where you will bring home long-lasting memories, good fortune, and maybe even some new traditions.
