Introduction
John Garry is a travel writer covering everything from urban culture to outdoor adventures. He's also a theater teacher, city cyclist and avid museum-goer who probably eats out too much in Brooklyn, NYC, where he lives.
Experience
After growing up in New York's Catskill Mountains, John spent a decade performing in musicals across North America and Europe before jumping into travel journalism and setting down roots in Brooklyn.
Selected publications
He has contributed to more than 14 Lonely Planet guidebooks since 2021, covering destinations from Colombia to Canada, with a strong focus on New York City and the Eastern US. His work also appears in Fodor's, Matador Network, AAA and other publications.
Charity work
On weekends, he teaches at NYC-based non-profit CO_LAB Theater Group, creating a social and artistic outlet for actors with developmental disabilities.
Awards
John is the recipient of four awards from the North American Travel Journalists Association, including Gold, Silver and Bronze for his work on articles related to the LGBTQ community and accessibility.
