The Passion Behind Paella

Here’s why you should book a Paella cooking class in Spain – and it’s not because of the food

If you look closely, Spain’s vibrant culture is incredibly evident in their cuisine. It perfectly embodies their passion and lust for life with its bold flavor combinations and fresh ingredients. The act of cooking itself becomes a romanticized ritual, a way to spread culture and love. Even dining in Spain is characterized by sharing dishes and connecting over good food and scintillating conversation. There is a significant amount of intention behind the entire routine, turning it into something meaningful and cherished.

Consequently, it makes sense that a cooking class in Spain would be about much more than just the food. In fact, when I attended a class at The Paella Club in Barcelona, the food wasn’t even my favorite part (even though it was delicious). What really made the experience were the spirited people and the convivial atmosphere.

Aside from the immersive culinary lesson and mouthwatering paella, the class consisted of a few things: lots of laughter, new friends, and, of course, unlimited cava. The instructors curated an ambience that was exemplary of Spanish culture, turning what could have been a straightforward, no-frills tutorial into a lively social gathering. By the end of the evening, our entire small group was chatting over the fruits of our labor like we’d known each other for years.

And isn’t this what Spanish cuisine is all about? Community, passion, and love. Paella is a dish made to share after all, prepared and served in a large pan for friends and family to connect over. Comprised of rice, saffron, and a variety of seafood, meat, or vegetables, paella is a medley of aromatic, vibrant ingredients. It is a dish that brings people together, perfectly exemplifying the communal spirit of Spanish cuisine.

The real lesson was this: To not just savor the food, but the entire experience. If Spain is anywhere on your future travel itineraries, be sure to take this opportunity to embrace the passion behind paella.
